Preventing falls effectively

CERVA WON'T LET YOU HIT THE GROUND

Approximately 3550 fatal occupational accidents occur in the European Union every year. Slightly more than one third are caused by falls. The fall hazard is most common during construction work and maintenance of buildings and equipment.

When can a fall occur?

Every wasted human life and painful injury is a shame, and caution is never necessary. Moreover, these accidents can be very well prevented. In most cases, they occur due to an underestimation of the risk. Workers embark on tasks at height without any means of personal safety, especially if the activity will take only a few minutes or regards relatively low height. Even routine work leads to carelessness, when the worker thinks that they have done the given activity many times and nothing has ever happened. However, the risk does not disappear by repeating the same mistake.

Wrong measures...

Accidents can also occur if measures against falling are incorrectly set, or if protective work equipment is incorrectly selected. These problems often stem from insufficient fall protection training and from purchasing protective equipment that does not match the situation and its risks. And how does it turn out in practice?

  • Employees may not be able to reach the place where they need to work.
  • Or they work at a relatively low height, but the safety system is adjusted for a greater height. The arresting system stops the fall too late; the worker falls to the ground and injures his legs.
  • Another risk may be too great impact force of the arresting system which may cause injuries to the worker even during an arrested fall. A fall energy absorption element (fall absorber) is often completely absent from fall arrest systems. At the same time, even a two-meter fall without sufficient softening means a profoundly severe injury, as it represents an impact at a speed of over 20 km/h. Therefore, it is necessary that a fall arrester is always part of the fall arrest system.
  • Another weak point is the anchor point. It should always be as high as possible so that the fall is as short as possible. Conversely, an anchor point placed low means an exceedingly long drop, which corresponds to twice the length of the connector. With its maximum length of two meters according to the standard, this means a fall of up to four meters.

Anchor points

Anchor points

Another service we offer is the on-site safety solution with the installation of anchor points or fall arrest systems allowing an extensive range of movement around the workplace.

We provided our service to Lhoist limestone quarry which needs to secure its employees who fill train tanks with lime. While doing that, they have to enter the wagon at a height of about 4 meters to open the filling hatches and close them again after filling. What solution did we provide to Lhoist? It was a rail system with a slider on which a self-retracting fall arrester was suspended. The employees secure themselves on it as soon as they enter the wagon, and they move along it on the wagon. This solution proved to be functional and amazingly simple to use. That is why we later introduced it in other places, for example, where heating oils used in production furnaces are pumped.

After this successful cooperation, the Lhoist company approached us with other problems to solve. One of them was the installation of cable fall arrest systems on the tracks of the crane, which runs at the highest point of the production unit at a height of about 40 meters. On both sides of the crane, we installed ropes with runners and catchers on the footbridges. The worker thus secures himself against falling already when exiting the stairs, even before he enters the place where he is at risk of falling. The runners allow the worker to move along the entire length of the track and conduct repairs or maintenance of the crane safely.
